Tips from experience
- Treat the minimum amount as a floor. The consulate looks at your family's overall situation, so build a well-documented file.
- Start legalisation and translation of your certificates early, as this takes the longest.
- Complete Universitaly pre-enrolment as early as the university allows, since the consulate cannot start without the pre-enrolment letter.
- Keep the originals together and bring copies, because the consulate may ask for further documents or call you for an interview.
- Check the consulate page in Lagos or Abuja for the current checklist and the final submission date for your academic year.

Funds to show
- Living funds
- €10,180 for one year
- Basis
- Italy sets a minimum for each academic year in an official circular, which Italian consulates quote as EUR 783.06 a month (EUR 10,179.85 a year).
- Tuition included
- No, add your first year tuition
The figure is indicative: it is the 2026/27 amount quoted in consular checklists, and the circular changes each year. The consulate treats it as a minimum, not as enough on its own, and looks at the overall financial position of you and your family. Cash, guarantees from people outside the immediate family and bank guarantees are not accepted. Check the current figure on your consulate page.
Calculate your total with tuition and dependantsTimeline
- Typical decision time
- Consulates usually decide within several weeks of a complete application, but timing differs by post and season. The consulate may also invite you for a short interview, and a university acceptance does not guarantee a visa.
- How early you can apply
- After you have completed pre-enrolment on Universitaly and received the university's pre-enrolment letter. Consulates open booking windows for each academic year, so check the consulate page.
- Latest sensible time to apply
- Each consulate publishes a final submission date for the academic year. Aim to apply at least 2 to 3 months before classes start.
How to apply for the Italy student visa
Choose a programme and pre-enrol
Create an account on the Universitaly portal, select your course and submit the pre-enrolment request. Some universities also require an admission test or a language assessment.
Get your qualifications recognised
Have your secondary school diploma legalised and translated into Italian, with a declaration of value or a CIMEA authenticity certificate. Ask the university which proof it accepts for your qualification.
Receive the pre-enrolment letter
Wait for the university to validate your pre-enrolment, then print the Universitaly summary and the pre-enrolment letter, in duplicate if the consulate asks for it.
Prepare funds and a sponsor file
Show the yearly minimum with your own or your family's resources. For a sponsor include payslips, employment letters, bank statements and the family documents the consulate lists.
Arrange insurance and accommodation
Buy health insurance that covers medical care and hospitalisation, and prepare proof of accommodation for at least the first period of your stay, as the consulate lists.
Book and submit the application
Book your appointment through the visa centre named by the Italian Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos. Submit your forms, passport, photo and the full document set.
Attend an interview if called
The consulate may invite you to a short interview about your study plan, your language level and your funds. Answer honestly and bring the originals.
Travel and apply for your residence permit
After entering Italy you have 8 working days to apply for a residence permit at the competent police headquarters. Bring your passport, visa, proof of enrolment, insurance and funds evidence.
Work rights and after study
While you study
Students can generally work up to 20 hours a week, with a yearly cap of 1,040 hours. Check the current rules with your university and the residence permit office.
After your course
Graduates can usually apply for a permit to look for work or start a business for a limited period after their degree, or convert the study permit into a work permit. Rules and quotas change, so check the Ministry of the Interior and the immigration desk before you plan around this.
Work and post study rules change often. Confirm them on the official source before you plan around them.
Common reasons for refusal
- The funds shown are below the yearly minimum, or the source of the money is not clear or traceable.
- The family's overall finances do not convincingly support the stay, even if the minimum amount is shown.
- Documents are missing, not legalised, or not translated into Italian.
- The language level is not proven for the course.
- The study history has unexplained gaps, or the consulate doubts the purpose of the stay.
- Accommodation or health insurance does not meet the consulate's conditions.
