Hungary student visa guide
Non-EU students who will study full time at a state-recognised Hungarian higher education institution, or attend its preparatory course, need a residence permit for the purpose of studies. Nigerian applicants submit the application at the Embassy of Hungary in Abuja, and the immigration authority (OIF) decides it. Once approved, the embassy issues a single-entry type D visa so you can travel and receive the permit in Hungary.

Tips from experience
- Apply early, because OIF can take up to 60 days and requests for more documents add time.
- Use bank statements that show steady, traceable funds over 6 months rather than a sudden large deposit.
- Bring original certificates, including WAEC or NECO, as the Abuja embassy asks for originals.
- Enter Hungary within 3 months of approval, because the approval lapses after that.
- Keep your permit valid until graduation if you want to apply for the 9 month job seeking permit afterwards.
- Treat the fee figures as indicative and confirm them on the OIF procedural fees page before you pay.

Funds to show
- Living funds
- No fixed amount. See the basis below.
- Basis
- OIF does not publish a fixed amount. You must show you can cover your living costs, accommodation, return travel and healthcare from legally acquired income or savings, for example with a bank statement in your name, a notarised family support declaration with proof of the sponsor's means, or a scholarship certificate.
- Tuition included
- No, add your first year tuition
The Embassy of Hungary in Abuja asks for your own bank statements for the last 6 months, signed and stamped by the bank, or, if a family member sponsors you, proof of the relationship, a notarised maintenance declaration, the sponsor's 6 months of bank statements and proof of the sponsor's income. You must also show proof that tuition is paid. Because there is no published figure, show enough to credibly cover a full year of living costs in your city, and check with the embassy.
Calculate your total with tuition and dependantsTimeline
- Typical decision time
- OIF says the authority decides a study residence permit application within 60 days of submission. Time spent fixing missing documents or answering requests does not count towards that period.
- How early you can apply
- Apply as soon as you hold your admission letter and proof of tuition payment, so the 60 day decision period ends well before the semester starts.
- Latest sensible time to apply
- Aim to submit at least three months before your course begins. After approval you must enter Hungary within 3 months, or the approval lapses.
How to apply for the Hungary student visa
Get admission and pay tuition
Obtain your admission letter from a state-recognised Hungarian higher education institution and pay the tuition the university asks for. Stipendium Hungaricum holders are exempt from tuition and use their scholarship documents instead.
Arrange accommodation
Secure a dormitory place, a lease or a paid reservation. The Embassy of Hungary in Abuja asks for a document that proves your place of accommodation in Hungary.
Prepare proof of funds
Get 6 months of bank statements, signed and stamped by the bank, in your name or your sponsor's name. A sponsor must also give a notarised maintenance declaration, proof of the family relationship and proof of income.
Get health insurance and a flight booking
The Abuja embassy lists health insurance and a flight booking among the required documents. OIF requires comprehensive health insurance, or proof you can cover healthcare costs yourself.
Complete the forms
Fill in and sign the residence permit application form and Appendix 9.13, which you can download from the OIF website. Check the form against your passport details.
Submit at the Embassy of Hungary in Abuja
Contact the embassy to arrange submission, then hand in your file with original diplomas and certificates, including WAEC or NECO. Your photo and fingerprints are taken for the biometric permit, and you pay the fee.
Wait for the OIF decision
OIF decides within 60 days and may ask for more documents. Answer any request quickly, because the waiting time for missing documents is added on top.
Collect your type D visa and travel
After approval the embassy issues a single-entry type D visa, valid for 3 months and allowing up to 30 days of stay. Enter Hungary within 3 months of approval or the approval lapses.
Receive your permit in Hungary
OIF posts the study residence permit card to your university's address. Later extensions are made online through Enter Hungary, from 90 days and no later than 30 days before expiry.
Work rights and after study
While you study
OIF states that holders of a study residence permit may work up to 30 hours a week during the study period, and full time for up to 90 days a year outside the study period. Check your permit and your employer's obligations before you start work.
After your course
If you complete your studies while your study permit is still valid, you can apply in Hungary through Enter Hungary for a residence permit for seeking a job or starting a business, at least 15 days before your study permit expires. It is valid for up to 9 months and cannot be extended. While holding it you can apply for a Hungarian Card, an EU Blue Card or a guest self-employment permit.
Work and post study rules change often. Confirm them on the official source before you plan around them.
Common reasons for refusal
- Bank statements did not cover 6 months, were not stamped and signed, or did not credibly show enough money for living costs.
- A sponsor's support was not backed by a notarised declaration, proof of the relationship and proof of income.
- Proof of tuition payment or a valid admission letter from a state-recognised institution was missing.
- There was no credible proof of accommodation in Hungary.
- Documents were incomplete, inconsistent or did not match the passport details.
- The applicant did not show the language ability needed for the programme.

Hungary student visa FAQ
Where do Nigerians apply for a Hungarian study residence permit?
At the Embassy of Hungary in Abuja. The embassy accepts the application and OIF, the Hungarian immigration authority, makes the decision. Contact the embassy for submission arrangements.
How much money do I need to show for Hungary?
OIF does not set a fixed amount. You must show you can pay for living costs, accommodation, return travel and healthcare, usually through 6 months of bank statements and proof that tuition is paid.
I have a Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship. Do I still need a residence permit?
Yes. Scholarship holders still need a study residence permit, but the scholarship covers tuition, a monthly stipend, a dormitory place or housing contribution, and medical insurance, and OIF accepts a scholarship certificate as proof of funds. Nigeria is a sending partner, nominated through the Federal Ministry of Education's scholarship department. The stipend does not cover all living costs, so plan extra money.
Can I work while studying in Hungary?
Yes. OIF allows up to 30 hours a week during the study period and full-time work for up to 90 days a year outside it.
Can my family join me in Hungary?
No, not through family reunification. OIF states that family members of a person holding or applying for a study residence permit cannot get a family reunification permit.
Can I stay in Hungary after graduating?
You can apply for a 9 month residence permit to look for a job or start a business, as long as your study permit is still valid when you apply. It cannot be extended.
