Tips from experience

  • Follow the Abuja embassy's email format exactly, because one wrong attachment or a duplicate email disqualifies you from that month's draw.
  • Start the criminal record superlegalisation early, because it needs Nigerian legalisation first and then an embassy appointment.
  • Keep all documents under 180 days old on your submission date, so time your police certificate and bank statement carefully.
  • Use a sworn translator for Czech translations, or have translations certified by the embassy.
  • Buy insurance from an insurer authorised in the Czech Republic and check that the limit meets the EUR 400,000 rule.
  • Treat the fee and funds figures as indicative and confirm them on the Immigration Portal before you apply.

How to apply for the Czech Republic student visa

  1. Get admission

Obtain an original confirmation of studies or enrolment from a Czech university for an accredited programme or its preparatory course. Ask your university whether it can nominate you for the Student Mode scheme, which some students use to get a visa appointment sooner.

  2. Decide between visa and residence permit

A long-term visa for studies lasts up to 1 year in total. A long-term residence permit for studies can last up to 1 or 2 years and can be extended for a degree programme. You choose which one to apply for at the embassy.

  3. Get your criminal record certificate superlegalised

Obtain your Nigerian police certificate, have it legalised by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then book an appointment for superlegalisation at the Czech embassy in Abuja. Get a certified Czech translation.

  4. Prepare funds, accommodation and insurance

Gather a bank statement or other proof of funds, proof of accommodation and comprehensive health insurance from an insurer authorised in the Czech Republic.

  5. Register for an appointment in Abuja

Send one email in the embassy's monthly registration window to the study visa address on the embassy page, with only your passport number in the subject and PDF scans of your passport and proof of studies. Appointments are allocated by draw, and you hear within 7 days only if you get a slot.

  6. Submit in person

Attend your appointment with originals, the signed application form, a photo and the fee in naira. The embassy may take fingerprints and an interview may be requested.

  7. Wait for the decision

Track your application online on the Immigration Portal. The Ministry decides within 60 days and may ask for corrections or more documents.

  8. Collect your visa and travel

If approved, the embassy contacts you. Show your insurance before the visa is placed in your passport, then travel to the Czech Republic.

  9. Register and get your card

With a long-term visa, register with the Foreign Police within 3 business days of arrival. With a residence permit (D/VR visa), go to a Ministry of the Interior office within 30 days of arrival, give biometrics and collect your residence card within 60 days.

Work rights and after study

While you study

The Immigration Portal states that holders of a long-term residence permit for studies have free access to the labour market, so they can work without an additional work permit. Your main purpose must remain study, so confirm your situation with your university or the Ministry of the Interior before you start work.

After your course

After completing an accredited university programme in the Czech Republic, holders of a long-term residence permit for studies can apply for a long-term residence permit for seeking employment or starting a business. It is valid for up to 9 months, cannot be extended, costs CZK 2,500, and must be applied for in person at a Ministry of the Interior office before your study permit expires. Holders have free access to the labour market.

Work and post study rules change often. Confirm them on the official source before you plan around them.

Common reasons for refusal

  • Proof of funds was below the amount required for the length of stay, or the statement was not in the applicant's name.
  • The criminal record certificate was not superlegalised or not translated into Czech.
  • Documents were older than 180 days when the application was submitted.
  • Proof of accommodation or the original confirmation of studies was missing.
  • The application was filed at the wrong embassy, without the required 2 years of residence in that country.
  • Health insurance did not meet Czech requirements for the full stay.
