Tips from experience

  • Email for the appointment on the day your admission letter arrives.
  • Write the motivation letter and the commitment to leave carefully, because the canton uses them to judge your intentions.
  • Bring all three sets, unstapled, with originals where required.
  • Ask your university which canton handles your file and what living cost it expects.

How to apply for the Switzerland student visa

  1. Get an admission letter

Apply to a Swiss university or school and obtain the letter of admission. Pay or arrange the tuition fees.

  2. Book an embassy appointment

Email abuja.visa@eda.admin.ch right after your admission letter arrives. Applications are received in the mornings except Fridays, from 8.30am.

  3. Assemble the file in three sets

Prepare 3 signed D visa forms, passport, 4 photographs, admission letter, diplomas, motivation letter, a signed commitment to leave Switzerland after studies, a signed statement of intention at the end of studies, proof of fees, 6 months of bank statements, a CV and language proof. Two sets carry all documents, the third only the passport data page.

  4. Attend in person

Appear at the Embassy in Abuja. Missing documents mean a new appointment. Do not staple documents.

  5. Wait for the canton

The embassy sends the complete file to the cantonal immigration authority for the decision, which takes at least 8 to 12 weeks.

  6. Hand in your passport and travel

After approval, submit your original passport to get the visa, then travel and register with the local authority after arrival.

Work rights and after study

While you study

University guidance (ETH Zurich) says non-EU students may take paid part-time work of up to 15 hours a week during the semester, subject to cantonal approval. Confirm the rule with your canton and university before you accept a job.

After your course

SEM says third-country graduates of a Swiss higher education institution have six months from the end of their course to look for a job matching their qualifications. Longer work admission is limited to qualified workers and is not an entitlement, so check with the cantonal authority.

Work and post study rules change often. Confirm them on the official source before you plan around them.

Common reasons for refusal

  • The canton was not satisfied that the applicant will leave Switzerland after studies.
  • Financial means were not shown clearly through 6 months of bank statements.
  • The study plan was not convincing or did not fit the applicant's background.
  • Incomplete documents at the appointment, delaying the file.
  • Applying too late for the cantonal procedure to finish before the semester.
  • Tuition fees were not paid or exemption not proved.
