  • Only candidates nominated by their country's sending partner (a ministry, council or embassy) can proceed to the entrance stage.
  • You apply for up to two programmes from the Study Finder, and the fields open to you depend on your country. For Nigeria these include engineering, health, agriculture, computing, law, economics and doctoral study in any field.
  • Entrance exams are held in spring, with a minimum of 56 out of 100 points in the 2026/27 round.
  • Doctoral applicants may need a supervisor's statement before the doctoral school deadline.

Deadline

Opens in autumn and closes in mid January. 2026/27 round: closed 15 January 2026, 2 pm CET. The 2027/28 call is expected to follow the same pattern but was not yet published on 17 October 2026.

Deadlines move a little every year and some close early. Confirm the date on the official page before you plan around it.

Documents you will need

  • Valid passport (a national ID plus signed declaration is accepted until 1 August in the 2026/27 round)
  • Signed medical certificate on the mandatory template
  • Previous diplomas and transcripts, with translations where required
  • Motivation letter and CV
  • Proof of English language level for English-taught programmes
  • Checklist and Statement for Application PDFs from the Call, plus extra items for art applicants and doctoral applicants

How to apply, step by step

  1. Step 1: Check your country

Open the Partners page on stipendiumhungaricum.hu and confirm that your country is listed and which fields and levels are open to you.
  2. Step 2: Contact your sending partner

Ask your national sending partner (in Nigeria and Ghana this is a government scholarships body or ministry) about its own nomination steps and earlier internal deadline.
  3. Step 3: Choose programmes

Use the Study Finder to pick up to two programmes at Hungarian universities, and read the Call for Applications and its annexes.
  4. Step 4: Apply online

Register at apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu, fill in the form and upload all documents before the deadline. Applying is free.
  5. Step 5: Entrance exam and results

Nominated applicants sit the university entrance exam in spring. Results are announced around late June or early July.

Conditions if you accept

  • You must live in Hungary during your studies.
  • Full-time bachelor's and master's holders must take the compulsory Hungarian course (rule stated for students who began in autumn 2020 or later).
  • You must keep passing credits, averaging at least 18 credits over the last two semesters.

Tips for a stronger application

  • Contact your national sending partner early, because its deadline can be earlier than the 15 January portal deadline and nomination is compulsory.
  • Do not pay any agent. The Hungarian programme says applying is free and warns against paid agencies.
  • Get the medical certificate on the official template, since a different format can be rejected.
  • Prepare your passport early, as it must be uploaded before 1 August if you applied with an ID.
