Who can apply

Citizens of African countries

  • Enrolled in a recognised degree programme (short cycle, bachelor's, master's or doctoral) at a higher education institution in your country
  • Your university must have an Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement with a European university that won International Credit Mobility funding
  • Selected by your home university through a fair and transparent process
  • Study periods last 2 to 12 months; doctoral candidates may also do 5 to 30 day stays
  • Some national agencies add limits, for example on degree level or duration

Deadline

There is no central deadline. Universities announce internal calls once their Erasmus+ project is funded, and each sets its own closing date. Ask your international office when the next call opens.

Deadlines move a little every year and some close early. Confirm the date on the official page before you plan around it.

Documents you will need

  • Application to your home university's international office, in the format it sets
  • Learning agreement signed by you, your home university and the host university before departure
  • Proof of enrolment and academic transcript
  • Passport and visa for the host country
  • Grant agreement signed with the sending or receiving university

How to apply, step by step

  1. Step 1: Ask your international office

Find out whether your university has Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility partnerships and with which European universities.
  2. Step 2: Watch for internal calls

Your university or the European partner publishes a call; students apply to their own institution, not to the EU.
  3. Step 3: Prepare a learning agreement

Agree on the courses you will take abroad so the credits count toward your degree when you return.
  4. Step 4: Sign the grant agreement

Once selected, sign the grant agreement and arrange your visa and travel.

Conditions if you accept

  • You remain enrolled at your home university and return to complete your degree
  • Your home university must recognise the credits earned abroad as agreed in the learning agreement
  • The grant is a contribution to travel and living costs and may not cover everything
  • Maximum 12 months of physical mobility per study cycle

Tips for a stronger application

  • Students cannot apply directly to the EU; if your university has no partnership, encourage departments to build links with European partners
  • Living costs in cities like Paris or Amsterdam can exceed the grant; budget for the difference
  • A top-up exists for students with fewer opportunities; ask whether you qualify
  • This route is different from Erasmus Mundus joint master's scholarships, which you apply for individually
