  • Open to domestic and international students
  • First-class honours (H1) or an equivalent result, such as a Masters with a research component
  • Ranked on merit by the ANU College using academic record, research potential, referee reports and English
  • A qualified supervisor and space available in the research area

Deadline

International Round 1 closes 31 August each year for a start by the end of March the next year (the 2027 Round 1 date has passed). Round 2 closes 15 April for a start by 31 August the same year.

Deadlines move a little every year and some close early. Confirm the date on the official page before you plan around it.

Documents you will need

  • Complete HDR application selecting the Australia: ANU Other Scholarship option
  • Academic transcripts showing at least an H1 or equivalent result
  • Other supporting documents required by your ANU research program (check the program page)
  • Referee reports submitted by the deadline
  • English language evidence

How to apply, step by step

  1. Step 1: Contact a supervisor

Reach out to an HDR Convener or prospective supervisor before you apply, as ANU strongly advises.
  2. Step 2: Apply for admission

Submit your research degree application and select Australia: ANU Other Scholarship to be considered.
  3. Step 3: Chase referee reports

Apply two to three weeks early so referees can submit their reports before the deadline; incomplete files are not ranked.
  4. Step 4: Wait for ranking

Your College selection committee ranks applicants in the round and offers go to the highest ranked.
