Who can apply

Citizens of African countries

  • Ordinarily resident in an eligible country. All African countries are on the list (it also includes many countries outside Africa); refugees are assessed by nationality.
  • Applying to start a new full-time eligible course for 2027-28, such as the MPP, MBA, BCL, MSc African Studies, MSc Economics for Development, MSc Global Health Science and Epidemiology, MSc Energy Systems or MSc Advanced Computer Science (see the full list on the Oxford page). DPhil courses are not eligible.
  • Intending to return to your country of ordinary residence after the course.
  • Able to show how your studies link to a career improving public life in your country or region.
  • Not holding a deferred offer, and not a current Oxford student (unless already a Weidenfeld-Hoffmann scholar).
  • Offered a place from the December or January deadline round; waitlisted or held-over applications are not considered.

Deadline

Submit the course application and the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann statement by your course's December 2026 or January 2027 funding deadline (check the course page). Shortlisted candidates are interviewed online, likely in April 2027, and decisions are expected by the end of May 2027.

Deadlines move a little every year and some close early. Confirm the date on the official page before you plan around it.

Documents you will need

  • University of Oxford graduate application form with Weidenfeld-Hoffmann selected in the scholarships section
  • Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement 2027/28 (downloadable form from the Oxford page)
  • Transcripts, CV, statement of purpose and references required by your course
  • English test results where required

How to apply, step by step

  1. Step 1: Check course and country

Confirm your course is on the eligible list and that your country of ordinary residence is eligible.
  2. Step 2: Download the statement

Download and complete the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement 2027/28 from the Oxford scholarship page.
  3. Step 3: Apply to Oxford

Complete the Oxford graduate application, select Weidenfeld-Hoffmann in the University of Oxford Scholarships section and upload the statement.
  4. Step 4: Meet the funding deadline

Submit everything by the December or January deadline for your course; later applications are not considered.
  5. Step 5: Online interview

If shortlisted, attend an online interview, likely in April 2027. If you have heard nothing by the end of May 2027, assume you were unsuccessful.

Conditions if you accept

  • Expected to return to your country of ordinary residence after completing the course.
  • Successful scholars may be moved to a partner college that co-funds the award.
  • Full participation in the Leadership Programme alongside your degree.

Tips for a stronger application

  • Your statement should connect your chosen course to a specific public-interest problem in your country; generic leadership language is not enough.
  • Applying also lets your file be considered for partner schemes run by the Trust.
  • Choose your course from the eligible list first: applying to an ineligible course means no consideration at all.
  • The Trust does not give feedback, so apply for Clarendon and other awards in parallel.

Winning the award does not include the visa. Plan your application with our guide for the host country.
