Who can apply

Open to most nationalities

  • Offered a place in a doctoral programme at the University of Auckland
  • Strong academic record; doctoral entry generally needs a Masters or Honours degree at a B+ equivalent or better
  • New international PhD students pay domestic fees if they live in New Zealand for the whole programme (up to 12 months overseas allowed)
  • International students on a student visa must study full-time

Deadline

Four rounds a year: apply by 1 November, 1 February, 1 May or 1 August. For 2027, the first apply-by date is 1 November 2026, with offers by 1 February 2027.

Deadlines move a little every year and some close early. Confirm the date on the official page before you plan around it.

Documents you will need

  • Online doctoral application for admission
  • Transcript of your highest qualification with the grading scale
  • One-page Statement of Research Intent on the university template
  • CV including publications
  • English test results such as IELTS or TOEFL, if required
  • Two confidential referee reports

How to apply, step by step

  1. Step 1: Check entry and supervision

Confirm you meet doctoral entry requirements and, if you can, name a proposed supervisor in your application.
  2. Step 2: Apply for the PhD

Complete the online doctoral application with your transcript, research statement, CV and referee details.
  3. Step 3: Opt in for the scholarship

Indicate on the application form that you want to be considered; there is no separate scholarship form.
  4. Step 4: Apply by a round date

Submit by 1 November, 1 February, 1 May or 1 August, and wait for the scholarship decision before enrolling.

Conditions if you accept

  • Take up the scholarship by the date in your award letter or it is forfeited
  • Living outside New Zealand for more than the allowed time means paying international fees
  • Governed by the Doctoral Scholarship Terms and the Scholarships and Prizes Statute

Tips for a stronger application

  • Because international PhD students pay domestic fees in New Zealand, tuition is low even before the scholarship
  • Apply by 1 November 2026 to be in the first round for 2027
  • Do not enrol before you hear the scholarship outcome, or you may lose the chance to be considered
  • Request a funding confirmation letter from Student Services Online for your visa once you receive an offer
