Fields: Any field

Who can apply

Open to most nationalities

  • Young researchers from all disciplines and all countries except Austria can apply, including African researchers.
  • You must be 35 or younger at the time of application.
  • You need a research project in Austria and a host institution.
  • The OeAD lists doctoral students, postgraduates, postdocs and researchers from universities outside Austria as the target group.
  • Extensions beyond the grant period are not possible.

Deadline

Online application is possible from September to 1 December. The OeAD news for 2026/27 listed 1 February 2026 as the deadline for that cycle, so confirm the exact 2027/28 closing date on oead.at.

Deadlines move a little every year and some close early. Confirm the date on the official page before you plan around it.

Documents you will need

  • Online application in the OeAD grants portal
  • Research plan and CV
  • Invitation or confirmation from an Austrian host
  • Degree certificates and proof of enrolment or employment
  • Translations into English or German of documents in other languages

How to apply, step by step

  1. Step 1: Find a host

Contact an Austrian university and agree your research project with a supervisor.
  2. Step 2: Read the FAQ

Check the Ernst Mach Grant worldwide FAQ on oead.at for documents and rules.
  3. Step 3: Apply online

Submit your application and upload documents in the OeAD online application tool before the closing date.
  4. Step 4: Plan visa and insurance

If selected, plan your visa, health insurance and travel, and check the OeAD FAQ for what you must cover yourself.

Conditions if you accept

  • Grants are for a fixed period of 1 to 9 months and cannot be extended.
  • Check the OeAD FAQ for health insurance, visa and travel costs you must cover yourself.

Tips for a stronger application

  • Get your host's confirmation early, because applications without a clear Austrian host are weak.
  • This is a short research visit, not a degree scholarship, so do not apply expecting a full master's.
  • Keep original-language documents and add a rough English or German translation. A certified translation is not required.

Student visa guides

Winning the award does not include the visa. Plan your application with our guide for the host country.
