Why Scholarship Committees Reject 90% of Essays in the First Minute

Chevening, DAAD, and Erasmus+ readers spend under two minutes on most essays. These are the mistakes that get yours discarded — and what winners do instead.

25 April 2026 Jandify Team

Scholarship committees read hundreds of essays per day during selection season. Most are eliminated within the first paragraph. After helping applicants win Chevening, Commonwealth, DAAD, and Erasmus+ awards, we can tell you the difference is rarely talent — it is strategy.

Mistake 1: The autobiography opening

"I was born in a small town..." — the reader has seen this opening two hundred times today. Winning essays open with a specific moment, problem, or result: "The flood that closed my school for three months taught me more about infrastructure policy than any textbook."

Mistake 2: Passion without evidence

Every rejected essay claims passion. Winning essays prove impact with numbers: "I trained 40 teachers," "our clinic reduced wait times by half," "the app reached 3,000 users." One quantified achievement outweighs five adjectives.

Mistake 3: Ignoring the funder's agenda

Chevening wants future leaders who will build UK ties. DAAD wants development impact in your home country. Erasmus+ wants European cooperation. Committees fund their mission, not your dream — your essay must show how your goals advance theirs.

Mistake 4: The vague return plan

"I hope to give back to my community" is a discard phrase. Winners write: "Within two years of returning, I will join the National Power Regulatory Agency, where my MSc in energy policy directly addresses the grid reform program launched in 2025." Named institutions, timelines, and mechanisms.

Mistake 5: Recycling one essay everywhere

Committees can smell a generic essay instantly, because it answers no question in particular. Rewrite for every application. Yes, it is slow. So is reapplying next year.

What the winning structure looks like

  • Open with a concrete moment or measurable result — two sentences maximum
  • Establish your track record with quantified achievements
  • Connect your goals precisely to this scholarship and this course
  • Close with a specific, named return-home plan
