Schengen visa refusal rates for Nigerian applicants remain among the highest in the world — but the refusals cluster around the same five preventable mistakes. Fix these and your odds change dramatically.
1. Apply to the country you will actually visit most
Officers check whether your main destination matches the embassy you applied through. If you apply through Portugal but your itinerary shows six nights in Paris and one in Lisbon, that is grounds for refusal by itself. Your main-destination country (most nights) must issue the visa.
2. Your itinerary must be bookable, coherent, and honest
A one-line "I will visit museums" plan reads as unprepared. Submit a day-by-day itinerary with real hotel reservations (refundable bookings are fine and expected) and flight reservations. Do not submit fake bookings — consulates verify, and a cancelled-before-submission reservation flagged during checks is treated as deception.
3. Prove you will come back
The unwritten question behind every tourist visa is: will this person return? Strong ties are concrete: an employment letter with approved leave dates, business registration and tax filings if self-employed, property documents, family circumstances. A sworn "I promise to return" letter carries no weight; evidence does.
4. Match your budget to your trip
If your itinerary shows a 10-day trip costing €2,000 and your statement shows €600 of accessible funds, the numbers refuse the application for you. Officers expect roughly €80–€120 per day available, plus flights, with a bank history that makes the balance believable (see our proof-of-funds guide).
5. Small inconsistencies kill applications
The form says self-employed; the statement shows salary credits. The invitation letter says staying with family; the form says hotel. The insurance covers 8 days of a 10-day trip. Every mismatch is a doubt, and doubts accumulate into refusals. Have someone detail-obsessed review the entire file side by side before submission.
If you were refused before
A previous refusal is not fatal — but reapplying with the same weak file is. Address the stated refusal ground head-on in a cover letter, with new evidence. Our document preparation service exists precisely for this: we rebuild the file the way the officer will read it. Start at /apply or talk to us first via /consultation.
