Portugal has quietly become one of the smartest study destinations in Europe: affordable tuition, English-taught master's programs, a clear path to residency, and universities in Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra that rank well internationally. Here is the visa process from start to finish.
Step 1: Secure your admission first
Your visa application starts with an acceptance letter from a Portuguese institution. Public universities charge roughly €550–€3,500 per year for most programs — apply early through each university's portal, as popular English-taught master's programs fill by spring.
Step 2: Gather the core documents
- Valid passport (at least two blank pages, valid 3+ months beyond your stay)
- University acceptance letter and proof of tuition payment or exemption
- Proof of funds — roughly the Portuguese minimum wage per month of your stay
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal (university housing letter, rental contract, or host declaration)
- Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical costs
- Criminal record certificate, apostilled and less than 90 days old
- Two passport photographs on white background
Step 3: The criminal record and apostille
This trips up more applicants than anything else. Your police character certificate must be apostilled — and if it is not in Portuguese or English, translated by a certified translator. Start this three to four weeks before your appointment; the apostille process in Nigeria alone can take two weeks.
Step 4: Book your VFS appointment
Portugal processes visas through VFS Global in Lagos and Abuja. Appointment slots are scarce between June and September, so book the moment you have your admission letter — you can still be assembling documents while you wait.
Step 5: The interview and biometrics
The appointment itself is administrative: document submission, biometrics, and a short set of questions about your study plans and funding. Answer consistently with your documents. Any mismatch between your stated funding and your bank statements will trigger scrutiny.
Timelines and fees
The national (D-type) student visa costs about €90. Official processing is 60 days but expect 30–90 days in practice. Apply no earlier than 90 days before travel, but as close to that mark as you can manage.
After arrival: the residence permit
Your visa gets you into Portugal; within its validity you must register with AIMA (the migration agency) for your residence permit. Your university's international office will usually help schedule this.
