Portugal punches far above its weight in higher education: four universities in the global top 500, tuition a fraction of UK or US costs, and a growing catalogue of English-taught programs. Here is where to aim.
University of Lisbon (ULisboa)
Portugal's largest university and its highest-ranked, strong across engineering (Instituto Superior Técnico is part of ULisboa), sciences, medicine, and economics. Técnico in particular is the destination for ambitious engineering students — rigorous, respected across Europe, with English-taught master's programs. Tuition for international students runs roughly €3,000–€7,000 per year depending on faculty.
University of Porto
The north's powerhouse, consistently neck-and-neck with Lisbon in rankings, with standout engineering (FEUP), medicine, and architecture faculties. Porto the city is cheaper than Lisbon — €650–€850 per month is a workable student budget — and its riverside campus life is hard to beat.
NOVA University Lisbon
Younger and more international in outlook. NOVA School of Business & Economics is triple-crown accredited and ranks among Europe's best business schools, with a stunning seaside campus in Carcavelos. NOVA's IMS school is a strong choice for data science and information management.
University of Coimbra
One of the world's oldest universities (founded 1290) and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Coimbra is a true student city — living costs are the lowest of the big four, and the academic traditions are an experience in themselves. Strong in law, humanities, and sciences.
Católica (Universidade Católica Portuguesa)
Portugal's leading private university, known for business, law, and biotech. Católica-Lisbon's business programs recruit strongly into European consulting and finance. Private tuition is higher (€6,000–€12,500) but scholarships are available.
How admission works
- Undergraduate: apply directly to each university; most require your secondary results and may set entrance exams or accept national exam equivalents
- Master's: apply through each university's portal with your transcript, degree certificate, CV, motivation letter, and English proficiency proof
- Deadlines: first-phase applications typically open January–April for September intake — earlier applications get scholarship priority
Documents Nigerian applicants always need
Apostilled degree certificates and transcripts, certified translations where required, and a passport valid well beyond your intended stay. This is the slowest part of the process — start document legalization before you even receive your admission decision.
